Presidency Releases Full List of 175 Convicts Granted Clemency by Tinubu

The Presidency on Saturday released the full list of 175 convicts and former convicts granted presidential pardon and clemency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy (PACPM) and the approval of the Council of State.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the list includes individuals convicted of various offences ranging from high-profile financial crimes and illegal mining to capital offences who were considered for clemency based on factors such as age, health, remorse, and good conduct.
The beneficiaries of the presidential amnesty include notable figures such as former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, who was convicted for bribery, and several inmates serving life sentences who have exhibited exemplary behaviour during incarceration.
Others on the list are individuals convicted for non-violent offences, minor drug-related crimes, and economic offences, as well as inmates with terminal illnesses and physical disabilities.
The statement noted that the gesture is part of President Tinubu’s broader commitment to justice sector reform, decongestion of correctional centres, and the promotion of restorative justice.
“This exercise aligns with President Tinubu’s belief that mercy and justice must work hand in hand.
The objective is to give deserving Nigerians a second chance at rebuilding their lives while ensuring public safety and accountability,” the Presidency said.
The statement further revealed that the approval followed a rigorous review process by the PACPM, chaired by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in collaboration with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
It added that state governments have been directed to work with the Nigerian Correctional Service to ensure the safe and orderly release of the beneficiaries, while appropriate monitoring mechanisms will be put in place.
President Tinubu, while approving the list, reportedly emphasized the need for balance between compassion and deterrence in the nation’s criminal justice system, saying the act of mercy “is not a weakening of justice but a reaffirmation of humanity.”
The latest exercise marks the first major batch of presidential pardons granted under Tinubu’s administration.
