Ebonyi Man Arrested for Allegedly Selling 5-Day-Old Son for ₦1.5 Million

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man, Chukwuma Onwe, for allegedly selling his five-day-old son for ₦1.5 million.

According to police reports, the arrest followed a tip-off from Onwe’s fiancée, Philomena Iroko, who became suspicious after Onwe claimed he had given the baby to his sister for care. Iroko reportedly alerted a neighbor after learning the infant had been sold to a woman named Chinyere Ugochukwu, prompting police intervention.

Both Onwe and Ugochukwu were apprehended, and the baby was safely recovered in the Azugwu area of Abakaliki Local Government Area. Authorities confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.

The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities involving child trafficking, warning that offenders would face strict legal action under Nigerian law.

Residents have expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing the need for stronger protection for vulnerable children and swifter prosecution of perpetrators.

The case has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about human trafficking and child welfare in the state. Legal proceedings against the suspects are expected to commence soon.
