At Least 23 Dead as Heavy Rains Devastate Central, Southeastern Mexico

At least 23 people have been confirmed dead following days of torrential rains that have triggered widespread flooding and landslides across central and southeastern Mexico.

The heavy downpour, which began earlier in the week, has wreaked havoc in the states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí, leaving thousands displaced and critical infrastructure damaged.

Mexican authorities say the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue in remote and waterlogged communities.

According to Mexico’s Civil Protection Agency, the state of Hidalgo has recorded the highest number of casualties, with 16 deaths reported so far.

Entire neighborhoods have been submerged, while swollen rivers have swept away vehicles, bridges, and farmlands.

More than 5,000 homes, hundreds of schools and hospitals, and several major roads have been affected, cutting off access to essential services. Local media reported that emergency workers have been struggling to reach stranded residents due to collapsed bridges and blocked highways.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has directed the National Guard, Army, and Navy to assist in evacuation and relief efforts.

“We are prioritizing the rescue of those trapped and ensuring food and shelter for all affected families,” the president said in a televised briefing on Friday night.

The National Meteorological Service warned that more rainfall is expected over the weekend, particularly in mountainous areas, which could worsen flooding and increase the risk of landslides.

Authorities have urged residents in high-risk zones to move to safer ground.

Emergency shelters have been set up in schools and community centers, while health officials are monitoring the potential outbreak of waterborne diseases in flooded regions.

As Mexico battles the aftermath of the storms, humanitarian agencies and volunteers are mobilizing food, blankets, and medical supplies to assist the displaced.
