Senate Seeks Establishment of Military Base in Kwara South

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in the Kwara South Senatorial District as part of efforts to tackle rising insecurity in the area.
The resolution followed a motion moved on the floor of the Senate during plenary, drawing attention to the increasing cases of kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery within the senatorial district, particularly around the forest belts of Ifelodun Local Government Area.
Lawmakers noted that the establishment of a military base in the region would serve as a strategic rapid response hub, enabling security forces to swiftly respond to distress calls and curb the activities of criminal elements operating in the border communities.
The Senate observed that the dense forests spanning parts of Kwara, Kogi, and Ekiti States have become notorious hideouts for criminal gangs who terrorize residents and travellers along major highways.
In adopting the motion, the Senate urged the Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs to collaborate with the Kwara State Government to identify a suitable location for the military installation and ensure its prompt establishment.
The lawmakers also called on the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies to intensify patrols and surveillance across vulnerable communities in the senatorial district.
The Senate’s resolution underscores growing concern among residents and leaders of Kwara South over the deteriorating security situation, which has continued to threaten farming, trade, and other economic activities in the area.
