Reps to Table Motion on Medical Aid for Nnamdi Kanu This Week

The House of Representatives is set to debate a motion this week seeking urgent medical attention for the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The development follows the intervention of the Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, during Tuesday’s plenary after Rep. Obi Aguocha (Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency) raised a point of order on Kanu’s deteriorating health condition.
According to a statement released in Abuja by Udora Orizu, Special Assistant on Press Affairs to the Deputy Speaker, Kalu assured that the House would properly consider the motion before the end of the week.
Aguocha, citing Order 6, Rule 2 on matters of privilege, told lawmakers that he had not received any response to the letter he earlier addressed to both the House leadership and the federal government requesting urgent medical intervention for Kanu.
However, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas directed Aguocha to withdraw the motion temporarily, noting that it was presented under the wrong House rules. He advised him to reintroduce it appropriately on another legislative day.
Corroborating the Speaker’s stance, Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized the importance of the issue and pledged that the motion would be formally presented soon.
“Mr Speaker, I’m also from Abia State. On the issue that is being raised by my colleague, we will present it before the House properly in the course of the week,” Kalu said.
“We will come properly before the House so that proper hearing will be given to it. I beg that you will give us the audience maybe tomorrow or next tomorrow.”
In response, Speaker Abbas said, “No problem, it’s just the procedure that I was challenging, not the substance of the issue. We will be willing and ready to give you all the time to present.”
