Lawmakers, Regulators to Chart New Course for Nigeria’s Downstream Petroleum Sector

The House of Representatives is mobilizing Nigeria’s most influential petroleum industry stakeholders to engage in high-level dialogue aimed at shaping the future policy and operational framework of the nation’s downstream sector.

The initiative, disclosed by Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Downstream, centers around an upcoming “Downstream Week” gathering.

The event is designed to bring together lawmakers, industry leaders, and regulatory bodies to gain regulatory clarity and explore critical investment and security opportunities.

The discussions will be headlined by a formidable array of national and industry figures. These include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who is slated to declare the event open, along with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Key regulatory and business leaders expected to participate are Farouk Ahmed, the boss of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA); Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC); and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote. Labor unions, specifically the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), will also be present to deliberate on the sector’s future.

Ugochinyere described the summit as “Nigeria’s most influential petroleum industry stakeholders gathering,” emphasizing its purpose as a celebration of recorded successes and a forum for identifying and resolving challenges. He stated that the event’s core mission is to “work out sustainable solutions to factors affecting stability and expansion in the downstream sector.”

The Committee Chairman concluded that, in partnership with leading industry players, the summit aims to foster collaboration and innovation necessary for robust sector growth.
