Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Abdullahi Ramat as NERC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm Engineer Abdullahi Ramat as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio read the President’s request during the chamber’s plenary session on Tuesday, marking the lawmakers’ first sitting after their annual recess.

The Senate had embarked on its yearly break on July 24, combining the legislative pause with constituency engagements.

The resumption, initially scheduled for September 23, was later postponed to October 7, 2025, extending the recess by two weeks.

The nomination of Ramat, if approved, will position him to lead the nation’s power sector regulator at a time when the industry faces pressing challenges around tariffs, electricity supply, and sectoral reforms.

Further details on the confirmation process are expected as the Senate begins deliberations.
