ESSC Chairman Fires Bendel Insurance Coach Over Poor Performance, Bazuaye Takes Charge

The Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), Amadin Enabulele, has approved the suspension of Bendel Insurance Football Club head coach, Greg Ikhenoba, following the team’s disappointing start to the 2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

Enabulele’s decision, announced on Monday, comes after Bendel Insurance suffered a 1–0 home defeat to Nasarawa United in a matchday seven fixture at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

The loss marked the team’s fourth of the season and deepened growing concerns among fans and stakeholders over the club’s poor form.

Bendel Insurance currently sits 16th on the NPFL table, having garnered only six points from seven matches, a stark contrast to their impressive campaign last season that saw them finish in the top half of the table.

In the interim, assistant coach Monday Bazuaye has been appointed to take charge of the team pending further directives from the commission.

According to a statement from the Edo State Sports Commission, the suspension was part of a broader effort to “restore discipline, motivation, and competitive spirit” within the club.

“The Commission is committed to ensuring that Bendel Insurance regains its winning mentality and delivers performances befitting the club’s proud history,” Enabulele stated.

Bazuaye, a former Nigerian international and one-time assistant coach of the Golden Eaglets, is expected to lead the team’s preparations ahead of their next NPFL fixture as efforts intensify to revive the club’s fortunes.
