Shettima: Nigeria Is Bigger Than Any Trade Union

Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that Nigeria’s collective interest supersedes that of any trade union or organization, emphasizing the need for unity and responsibility in pursuing national progress.
Shettima made the remark on Monday in Abuja at the opening of the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES 31), themed “The Reform Imperative: Building a Prosperous and Inclusive Nigeria by 2030.”
Addressing participants, the Vice President said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to difficult but necessary reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.
He urged labour unions and other stakeholders to work with the government in good faith, stressing that the ongoing economic reforms were designed to secure a better future for all Nigerians.
“Nigeria is bigger than any trade union, any association, or any individual interest. Our priority must be the survival and prosperity of our nation,” Shettima said.
He noted that while reforms may cause temporary discomfort, they are crucial to repositioning the economy, improving productivity, and ensuring inclusiveness by 2030.
The Vice President commended the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) for providing a platform for dialogue between the public and private sectors, adding that collaborative solutions are essential to overcoming current economic challenges.
The two-day summit, attended by policymakers, industry leaders, and development experts, focuses on key issues such as fiscal discipline, investment climate reforms, social inclusion, and innovation-driven growth.
Shettima reaffirmed that the Tinubu administration remains open to constructive engagement with all stakeholders, but insisted that national unity and long-term development must remain the ultimate goal.
