SERAP Demands Accountability for N14 Trillion Fuel Subsidy Savings from Wike,.Governors

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has warned Nigeria’s 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, demanding immediate disclosure of how they’ve spent the estimated N14 trillion in fuel subsidy savings.

Failure to provide these details, which the officials have collected through FAAC allocations since mid-2023, could lead to legal action from the rights group.

In a Freedom of Information (FOI) request dated October 4, 2025, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, called on the governors and the FCT Minister to provide:

* Detailed spending records of the fuel subsidy savings already collected.

* Specific plans for how subsequent expected fuel subsidy savings from FAAC allocations will be spent, including details of planned projects.

SERAP emphasized that despite the collection of these trillions of naira in increased FAAC allocations, there has been no corresponding improvement in basic public services like healthcare and education for poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

The rights group also urged the officials to publicly invite the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to actively track and monitor the spending of these funds to prevent diversion into private pockets.

SERAP stressed that the savings “ought to be spent solely for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable Nigerians” and that the lack of transparency poses a “significant risk of mismanagement or diversion of funds.”

The organization concluded that the secrecy surrounding the spending means that “Millions of poor and vulnerable Nigerians have not benefited” and “continue to face a worsening poverty crisis.”
