EFCC Operatives Flout Chairman Olukoyede’s Directive On Night Raids, Conduct 3 a.m. Operation In Suleja

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly violated the directive of the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, by carrying out a night raid in Suleja, Niger State, around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

According to eyewitnesses, the anti-graft operatives stormed several residential areas in the early hours of the morning, allegedly breaking into apartments and arresting young men suspected of internet fraud.

Residents claimed the operatives arrived in unmarked vehicles and operated for hours before leaving with several suspects.

The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who accused the EFCC team of high-handedness and disregard for the rule of law.

Some residents said the operatives confiscated phones and laptops without presenting any search warrants.

This development directly contradicts the directive issued by EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, in 2024, which explicitly banned nocturnal operations by agency personnel following public complaints of rights violations and excessive force during night raids.

At the time, Olukoyede had emphasized that “EFCC operations must be intelligence-driven, professional, and respectful of citizens’ rights,” directing that all arrests and searches be conducted only during daytime except in exceptional cases approved by the Commission’s headquarters.

Human rights advocates have since condemned the Suleja operation, calling for immediate investigation and sanctions against the erring officers.

Reacting to the incident, a senior EFCC official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the commission was aware of the report and had launched an internal inquiry. “If it is confirmed that operatives acted without authorization, disciplinary action will be taken,” the source said.

The Suleja raid adds to growing public scrutiny of EFCC’s enforcement methods, with critics urging the agency to balance its anti-corruption mandate with respect for due process and human rights.

As of press time, the EFCC headquarters has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
