Two Years After, Police Arrest Suspect in Abduction of Kano Village Head

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Usman Lawan Baba, popularly known as “Yellow”, over his alleged involvement in the 2023 abduction of the Village Head of Garun Babba, Alhaji Abdulmumini Mudi Zakari.

Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Saturday, disclosing that the suspect was apprehended on October 2, 2025, in Dakatsalle, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State two years after the crime was committed.

“The arrest was made in connection with a kidnapping and armed robbery incident involving the Village Head of Garun Babba, which occurred on 9th August 2023,” SP Kiyawa stated.

According to the police, the suspect had been on the command’s wanted list since the abduction, which sparked tension in Garun Babba community at the time. Following intelligence-led operations, detectives successfully tracked and captured the suspect at his hideout.

SP Kiyawa added that preliminary investigations revealed that “Yellow” was among a gang of armed men who stormed the residence of the traditional ruler in 2023, abducted him at gunpoint, and demanded a ransom before his eventual release.

He assured that the police remain committed to pursuing other members of the criminal gang who are still at large, noting that the command has intensified its crackdown on kidnappers and bandits across the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba, has directed that the suspect be charged to court upon the completion of investigation, and has reaffirmed the command’s determination to rid Kano State of all forms of violent crime,” the statement added.

The arrest has been met with relief in Garun Babba community, where residents described it as a sign of justice and a boost to public confidence in law enforcement.

Further updates on the case are expected as police continue investigations.
