Soludo Warns Against Levy Collection in Anambra Markets

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has issued a stern warning against the continued collection of unauthorized levies from petty traders in markets across the state. The governor gave the directive during an inspection visit to Eke Market in Awgbu, Aguata Local Government Area, where he expressed dismay over reports that some officials and touts were still demanding levies from small-scale traders despite an existing government policy that exempts them. Soludo reminded market authorities and revenue collectors that his administration had abolished the collection of taxes from traders whose wares are valued below ₦100,000, as well as hawkers, wheelbarrow pushers, and other vulnerable groups in the informal economy. He described the illegal levies as a violation of government policy and a direct attack on the livelihoods of struggling families. The governor further noted that his administration has introduced reforms to harmonize and digitalize revenue collection in order to eliminate multiple taxation, curb extortion, and prevent revenue leakages. He stressed that all payments must now be made directly into government accounts, not through market executives or middlemen. Warning that defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted. Soludo urged petty traders to resist illegal demands and report any extortion to the appropriate authorities. He said the state government is determined to protect small businesses and ensure that market operations are free from harassment. Market stakeholders, who have repeatedly complained about unauthorized levies and extortion, are expected to welcome the governor’s firm stance. However, observers note that strict enforcement and monitoring will be crucial in ensuring that the directive translates into real relief for traders across Anambra State.
