Centre Launches Integrity Index to Strengthen Local Government Accountability

The Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) has unveiled the Nigerian Local Government Integrity Index (NLGII), a pioneering framework designed to measure accountability, transparency, and corruption risks across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

The index, launched in Abuja on Friday, is the first of its kind in the country and seeks to provide an evidence-based national assessment of governance at the grassroots level. According to CeFTPI, the tool will serve as both a benchmark and a guide for improving service delivery, financial management, and public trust in local governance.

Speaking at the event, the Centre explained that the NLGII will highlight areas of strength and weaknesses in local administrations, while offering data-driven insights to aid policy reforms. Stakeholders, including civil society groups, development partners, and government representatives, welcomed the initiative as a timely step toward tackling corruption and deepening democratic accountability.

The launch of the index comes amid growing calls for greater transparency in Nigeria’s local governments, which receive a significant share of federal allocations but are often criticized for poor service delivery and weak accountability structures.
