Lagos Police Begin Tinted Glass Crackdown, Warn Officers Against Misconduct

The Lagos Police Command has launched full enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Prohibition of Tinted Glass Act, 2004, warning that any officer who abuses the process will face disciplinary action.
Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh directed officers to uphold professionalism during stop-and-search operations tied to the crackdown, stressing that supervising officers would be held vicariously liable for any misconduct.
“The exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to guarantee everyone’s security,” Jimoh said in a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on Thursday.
The command advised motorists with tinted windows to obtain a permit through the official portal, or replace the glasses with transparent ones if they do not wish to apply.
Vehicles without a valid permit will be impounded, and offenders prosecuted, the statement added.
SP Adebisi urged motorists to carry essential documents at all times and to cooperate during routine checks, noting that officers had been instructed to respect citizens’ rights.
The move comes as part of directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at curbing criminal activity often linked to the unauthorised use of tinted vehicles.
The Lagos Command also expressed appreciation to residents for their cooperation and assured that enforcement would be carried out with fairness and accountability.
Earlier today, the Zone Five Police Command, which covers Edo and Delta States, also began enforcing the ban on unauthorised sirens and tinted glass permits, signalling a nationwide compliance push.
