Elumelu Dedicates Global Award to African Entrepreneurs After Tragic Loss

United Bank for Africa Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has dedicated his latest global honour — the 2025 Appeal of Conscience Award — to African entrepreneurs, innovators, and colleagues working to transform the continent.
The Appeal of Conscience Foundation, founded in 1965 by Rabbi Arthur Schneier, presented the award during its annual ceremony in New York.
Elumelu’s wife, Dr. Awele Elumelu, received the honour on his behalf and delivered his remarks.
Elumelu, while reflecting on the recent Afriland Towers fire tragedy that claimed six lives, said the recognition carried mixed emotions.
“Just a few days ago, we lost six beloved colleagues in a tragic incident. They were family, friends, mothers, sons, and daughters, dedicated individuals whose absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. Across our group, we are grieving this deep loss,” he stated
Despite the sombre moment, Elumelu reaffirmed his life-long mission to place people at the centre of business and development.
“Humanity first: that has been the core of my life. How do we transform lives across Africa? How do we leave a legacy that uplifts people and creates opportunity for everyone? I was not born with a silver spoon, I inherited nothing.
This is why I dedicate this award to the thousands of capitalists across Africa who, against great odds, are building the continent we envision.”
The Appeal of Conscience Foundation honoured Elumelu alongside Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York. Rabbi Schneier described Elumelu as “a beacon of ethical entrepreneurship and visionary leadership,” stressing that business can serve as a force for peace, stability, and dignity.
Appeal of Conscience Gala Chair, Brian Moynihan, added that the two awardees personify “the moral leadership and global responsibility that the foundation stands for.”
