Troops Kill Notorious Bandit Leader ‘Mai Dawa’ in Kogi
Troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have neutralised a notorious bandit leader, popularly known as Mai Dawa, during a fierce gun battle in Kogi State.
The incident occurred on Monday during a clearance operation around Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Military sources confirmed that the slain kingpin had been terrorising residents of Egbe and its environs, as well as parts of Ekiti Local Government Area in Kwara State.
According to the army, Mai Dawa had been on the wanted list of security agencies for his involvement in a series of kidnappings, armed robbery attacks, and extortion along rural communities and highways within the axis.
During the operation, troops engaged the gang in a heavy exchange of gunfire, leading to the death of the bandit leader while other members of his gang reportedly fled with gunshot wounds.
A senior military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the success was a morale boost for ongoing operations against criminal elements in the North-Central region.
“The troops displayed gallantry and professionalism in neutralising the bandit leader who had for long made life unbearable for innocent citizens.
Operations are still ongoing to track down his fleeing associates,” the source said.
Residents of Egbe and surrounding communities have expressed relief over the development, describing the fall of Mai Dawa as a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity in the area.
The Nigerian Army has assured that it will sustain its offensive operations to ensure peace and security across Kogi, Kwara, and other affected states.
