Sowore to Face Trial Over Alleged False Posts Against President Tinubu
The Federal Government will on Tuesday, October 1, arraign human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, before a Federal High Court in Abuja on a five-count charge bordering on alleged publication of false information against President Bola Tinubu.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Federal Ministry of Justice, Sowore is accused of using his social media platforms to disseminate posts deemed capable of inciting public unrest and undermining national security. The prosecution alleges that the activist knowingly circulated false information with the intent to cause disaffection against the President and to provoke a breakdown of law and order across the country.
The government further claimed that Sowore’s online activities violated provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, as well as sections of the Criminal Code relating to false publication and incitement.
Court officials confirmed that Sowore is expected to take his plea when the matter comes up for mention before Justice [insert judge’s name if available].
Sowore, a former publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has had a history of legal battles with the government, particularly over his activism and criticism of state policies.
Legal observers note that the case could once again test Nigeria’s delicate balance between safeguarding national security and upholding constitutional rights to freedom of expression.
Neither Sowore nor his legal representatives have publicly responded to the fresh charges at the time of filing this report.
