Independence Day: Katsina Governor Calls for Unity to Tackle Insecurity

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has called on Nigerians to close ranks and work together in tackling insecurity, describing unity as the strongest weapon against the threats confronting the nation. In his Independence Day message to mark Nigeria’s 65th anniversary, the governor congratulated citizens on the milestone but urged them to use the occasion for sober reflection on the challenges facing the country, especially insecurity in the northern states. Governor Radda said the persistence of banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes in Katsina and beyond demanded collective responsibility from government and citizens alike. He stressed that security should no longer be seen as the sole responsibility of security agencies but as a shared duty requiring vigilance, patriotism, and active participation from the public. “Security recognises no tribe, religion, or political affiliation,” he said. “We must stand together as one people to overcome the threats that undermine our peace and progress.” The governor highlighted measures taken by his administration to strengthen security in Katsina, including the establishment of the Community Watch Corps and closer collaboration with federal security agencies. He assured residents that his government would continue to provide support, logistics, and intelligence-sharing mechanisms to enhance the fight against banditry. Governor Radda also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his renewed commitment to addressing insecurity, noting that the federal government had promised additional resources and support to strengthen ongoing operations in the state. He acknowledged the suffering of communities affected by repeated attacks in recent months, including assaults on villages, hospitals, and farms, and assured citizens that government would intensify efforts to restore peace. Beyond security operations, the governor pledged continued investment in social and economic initiatives designed to address the root causes of insecurity. According to him, programmes in education, agriculture, and youth empowerment are already being expanded to provide alternatives to vulnerable young people who could otherwise be exploited by criminal groups. Civil society groups and community leaders have welcomed the governor’s call but urged faster, more visible actions such as stronger protection for schools and health centres, and speedy prosecution of suspects arrested in security operations. Governor Radda concluded his Independence Day message with a call for renewed patriotism and prayers for national unity. “Our forefathers fought to secure Nigeria’s independence. Today, it is our duty to preserve that freedom by standing together, building trust, and ensuring peace and prosperity for all,” he said.
