APC’s Grip On Lagos Can Be Broken In 2027 – Doherty

APC’s Grip On Lagos Can Be Broken In 2027 – Doherty

Former Lagos State governorship candidate and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Funso Doherty, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not have an unshakable hold on Lagos politics, insisting that the ruling party can be dislodged in the 2027 general elections.

Doherty, who contested the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before defecting to the PDP, said the opposition was better positioned than ever to provide a credible alternative for Lagos residents.

Speaking in an interview, he dismissed suggestions that opposition parties remained too fragmented to challenge the dominance of the APC in the state.

According to him, the PDP retains the nationwide structures, history, and institutional capacity to lead the charge against the ruling party.

“The PDP is still the main opposition,” Doherty stated. “Yes, we have the likes of the Labour Party and ADC coming up, but the established structure, the history and the institutional capacity of PDP cannot be diminished.”

He argued that Lagosians were yearning for genuine change after years of APC control, stressing that the PDP must remain united and focused to capitalize on that sentiment.

Doherty also maintained that Lagos should not be seen as a political fortress that cannot be breached, noting that with proper strategy and unity of purpose, the 2027 elections could produce a major political upset.

The APC has dominated Lagos politics for over two decades, consistently winning governorship and legislative seats since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

However, the opposition believes growing discontent among residents could tilt the balance of power in future elections.
