Police Confirm Abduction of 17 Passengers on Calabar Waterway

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of 17 passengers by sea pirates along the Calabar Waterways.

The command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, DSP Igri Ewa, stated on Saturday in Calabar that the incident occurred on Thursday.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the command has already “swung into action” to ensure the “immediate and prompt” rescue of the abductees.

Officer and Politician Narrowly Escape

DSP Ewa also disclosed that a serving police officer in Akwa Ibom and a popular politician in Cross River who were on the same boat narrowly escaped abduction.

One of the survivors recounted the incident, explaining how the pirates carried out the attack: “They stopped our boat, transferred some passengers to their boat, and when their boat was full, they took off.”

The survivor added that after arriving at the Inland Waterways Jetty, they were “thoroughly quizzed by the police” and their statements were taken before they were allowed to leave.
