Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai in Nigeria to Champion Girls’ Education

Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel laureate and global advocate for education, is currently visiting Nigeria to advance the priorities of the Malala Fund in the country.

The visit is focused on bolstering the Fund’s efforts to ensure that more Nigerian girls can access and complete their education. During her time in Abuja, Malala is meeting with the Fund’s Board of Directors, including her father and co-founder Ziauddin Yousafzai, and CEO Lena Alfi.

The key priorities for the Malala Fund’s work in Nigeria include:

* Enabling the return of married and pregnant girls to school.

* Increasing education financing to better meet girls’ specific needs.

* Leveraging education as a policy solution to help end child marriage.

The Fund’s Communication Manager in Nigeria, Nankwat Dakum, stated that Malala will also engage directly with young girls and education champions supported by the Fund.

These meetings aim to hear firsthand about their experiences and the changes they hope to see in their communities.

In addition, Malala plans to meet with key government and civil society leaders to accelerate progress on girls’ education across Nigeria.

Nigeria is a central focus for the Malala Fund, which has already invested over $8 million in Nigerian partner organizations since 2014 to dismantle barriers to girls’ schooling. Her visit comes at a crucial time as stakeholders work to strengthen commitments to ensure every girl in Nigeria can complete 12 years of education.
