Burna Boy Reveals Inspiration Behind Stage Name

Grammy-winning Nigerian music star, Burna Boy, has shed light on the origins of his now world-famous stage name, explaining that it grew out of his childhood imagination of being a superhero.

Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, Burna Boy said the idea for his name was inspired by his early love for drawing comic book characters. Speaking during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Afrobeats sensation recalled how, as a young boy, he often sketched superheroes like Spiderman and Superman.

According to him, at one point he wanted to invent his own superhero persona, complete with cape and powers. When the time came to give this imaginary hero a name, “Burna Boy” was the one that stuck.

“I used to draw comic books and superheroes when I was little. I wanted to create my own superhero, and that’s how I came up with Burna Boy,” he explained.

The name, initially born from childhood creativity, eventually became the identity under which he launched his music career. Today, “Burna Boy” is a global brand, attached to multiple hit records, sold-out concerts across continents, and prestigious awards including a Grammy.

Analysts note that the revelation gives fans a glimpse into the artist’s self-perception: the idea of Burna Boy as larger-than-life, bold, and resilient fits into the heroic image he has cultivated in his music and stage performances.

What began as a child’s playful sketch of a superhero has now become one of the most recognised names in contemporary African music — an embodiment of how imagination can shape destiny.
