INEC Flags Off Campaigns for FCT Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has granted political parties the green light to begin campaigns ahead of the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, confirmed in a statement that campaigns officially opened on September 24, 2025, and will run until midnight of February 19, 2026.
The election itself is scheduled for February 21, 2026.
Olumekun explained that the decision aligns with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and Item 8 of INEC’s published timetable and schedule of activities.
He reminded political parties and candidates that while they are free to engage the public, campaigns must adhere strictly to the rules set by the law.
INEC warned against the use of abusive language, hate speech, violence, or destruction of opponents’ campaign materials, citing Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act.
The Commission also stressed that all parties are entitled to equal access to public facilities such as media outlets, advertising spaces, rally grounds, and meeting halls.
In line with Section 95(2), incumbents are prohibited from using state resources or office privileges to unfairly advantage themselves or their parties.
The Commission further reminded stakeholders that the final list of 17 candidates cleared for the polls has already been published.
A total of 68 positions are up for contest — six chairmanship seats across the FCT’s area councils and 62 councillorship slots. With the final list confirmed, Olumekun clarified that no further withdrawals or substitutions of candidates are allowed, except in the event of death, as provided under Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act.
INEC urged political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns that address the needs of residents, while also assuring voters of its commitment to conducting a transparent and credible election.
