Trump to Headline Opening of 80th UN General Assembly in New York
The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will officially open on Tuesday in New York, with U.S. President Donald Trump set to deliver the lead address at the high-level General Debate.
The annual gathering, which brings together world leaders to deliberate on pressing global issues, will commence at 9 a.m. local time (1300 GMT).
Traditionally, Brazil delivers the first national address, followed by the United States. This year, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will speak, after which President Trump is expected to take the podium as host nation leader.
Other world leaders scheduled to speak on the opening day include Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and French President Emmanuel Macron, who are both expected to address topics ranging from global security and conflicts to climate change and multilateral cooperation.
Ahead of the national statements, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will deliver his annual opening message, highlighting the state of the world and urging member states to act collectively on peace, development, and sustainability.
The newly elected President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock of Germany, will also make her first address, outlining her vision for the 80th session.
The General Debate, running through the week, will provide a stage for leaders and foreign ministers from 193 member states to present their views on the most urgent global challenges, including geopolitical tensions, humanitarian crises, economic recovery, and climate action.
The 80th session comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty, and expectations are high for strong commitments and renewed international cooperation.
