Ogun Court Remands Man Who Assaulted Wife in Viral Video

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has ordered the remand of a 57-year-old sawmiller, Fatai Quadri, who was caught on video physically assaulting his wife, 50-year-old Rukayat Quadri.

The disturbing footage, which surfaced online last week, showed Quadri repeatedly hitting his wife with a stick and fists, sparking outrage across social media platforms and renewed calls for tougher action against domestic violence.

During his arraignment on Monday, police prosecutors charged Quadri with assault, domestic violence, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

The charge sheet stated:

“That you, Quadri Fatai Abiodun, on September 15, 2025, at about 6:00 a.m., at No. 11, Bakare Street, Oke-Owa, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, in the Ijebu-Ode Magisterial District, did wilfully and unlawfully assault Mrs. Rukayat Quadri, 50 years, your wife, by beating her with a stick and delivering several fist blows all over her body, which caused her bodily injuries, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”

The prosecution further alleged that Quadri’s actions constituted domestic violence, contrary to existing laws protecting victims of spousal abuse in the state.

Magistrate T. A. Ajibola, after listening to the submissions, ordered the defendant’s remand at the Ijebu-Ode Correctional Centre pending further hearing of the case. The matter was adjourned until October 17, 2025.

The case has drawn public attention, with women’s rights groups urging authorities to ensure justice is served and stressing the need for stronger enforcement of domestic violence laws in Nigeria.
