FCT Council Polls: INEC Shuts Door on Candidate Changes Ahead of February Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

The commission stressed that no further withdrawal or replacement of candidates will be allowed, except in the event of a candidate’s death or that of their running mate before Election Day, in accordance with Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act.

The finalized list features candidates from 17 political parties who submitted their nominations by the August 11, 2025 deadline. It provides detailed information on each candidate, including party affiliation, age, gender, and academic qualifications.

The full list has been made publicly accessible on INEC’s official website and social media platforms to ensure transparency.

The FCT Area Council elections will fill 68 seats across the six area councils: Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji.

INEC urged voters to review the candidate list carefully to make informed choices at the polls.
