Nigeria’s Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas Pipeline Project Nears Completion

The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project, a flagship energy initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, has reached a significant milestone with 83.05% completion as of July 19, 2025.
This $2.8 billion project is designed to transform Nigeria’s economic landscape by supplying 2.2 billion cubic feet of gas daily to power plants across Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano.
The AKK pipeline, stretching 614 kilometers, aims to harness Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources for power generation, industrialization, and economic growth. Upon completion, the project will address energy inequality in northern Nigeria, catalyze industrial revival, support agro-processing industries, and improve agricultural value chains.
Mechanical completion of the project is expected by November 2025, which will see the physical pipeline infrastructure ready, with only testing, certification, and commissioning left before gas begins to flow.
The project has already created employment opportunities for over 1,900 skilled and semi-skilled Nigerians, with thousands more positions expected once operations commence.
The pipeline will unlock economic potential in northern Nigeria, reduce transportation costs through compressed natural gas adoption, and position Nigeria as a regional energy hub.
Additionally, the project will reduce gas flaring in the Niger Delta and cut Nigeria’s carbon footprint.
The Tinubu administration’s commitment to completing the AKK pipeline is evident in its “fast-track” approach, mobilizing resources and ensuring contractors meet deadlines.
With NNPC Ltd funding the project through a mix of balance-sheet financing and strategic partnerships, the AKK pipeline is poised to become a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy sector and economic development.
