NCoS Intercepts Man Attempting to Smuggle Drugs into Kuje Custodial Centre
Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have arrested a man for attempting to smuggle suspected psychoactive substances into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the FCT Command’s Public Relations Officer, Adamu Duza.
According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Njimogu Ikedi, was intercepted around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday while trying to visit an inmate at the facility.
“During a routine security search, officers discovered items believed to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive substances concealed inside his boxer shorts, which were worn in the manner of a diaper,” Duza said.
He added that the suspect was immediately taken into custody for further interrogation, and the seized items have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for investigation and possible prosecution.
Duza stressed that the NCoS remains committed to zero tolerance for trafficking of illicit substances into custodial centres, warning that anyone caught attempting to compromise security would face the full weight of the law.
He also commended the vigilance of the correctional officers on duty and assured the public that proactive measures were in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Kuje custodial facility, one of the country’s most prominent correctional centres, has in recent years faced several security breaches, including a deadly jailbreak in July 2022.
