LASTMA Warns Against Use of Union Stickers on Private Vehicles

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has cautioned transport unions and their affiliates against the unauthorized use of “union stickers” on private vehicles, stressing that the practice is illegal and undermines traffic laws and public safety.
In a statement issued over the weekend, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the agency had observed that some private vehicle owners were using union stickers and emblems in place of officially issued number plates. He noted that such acts not only contravene established regulations but also pose security risks by making vehicle identification more difficult.
“Only government-authorised agencies are empowered by law to issue vehicle registrations and number plates. The use of union stickers or symbols as substitutes is unacceptable and unlawful,” Bakare-Oki declared.
He warned that any vehicle caught using these unauthorized identifiers would be impounded, with offenders facing legal sanctions under Lagos State traffic laws. The GM added that LASTMA, in collaboration with security and enforcement agencies, will intensify surveillance across major roads to clamp down on the violation.
The agency emphasized that proper registration and display of number plates remain critical for effective traffic management, public safety, and accountability. It also urged leaders of transport unions to discourage their members from encouraging or engaging in practices that compromise the integrity of the state’s vehicle registration system.
LASTMA’s directive is part of broader efforts by the Lagos State government to strengthen orderliness on its roads, improve security, and ensure strict compliance with transportation regulations.
