Governor Abba Yusuf Alleges Empty Treasury, Showcases Fiscal Reforms in Kano

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has accused his predecessor of leaving behind “empty coffers” and reckless financial practices, claiming his administration has since restored stability through prudent management.
Speaking on Thursday during the presentation of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to 4,315 former BESDA teachers, Yusuf said his government blocked financial leakages and restructured state accounts.
According to him, billions of naira are now available for public use.
“If they believe in themselves, they should come forward and show us the tangible work they did in Kano. Instead, they exhausted the treasury to the extent that Kano was left indebted to banks,” he said in a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesman, Sanusi Tofa.
Yusuf accused the past administration of hiring more than 128 tax consultants who delivered “no tangible results” for the state.
He said his reforms have already translated into gains, citing Kano’s improved performance in the 2025 NECO and WASSCE examinations as proof of new investments in education.
“We have sacrificed our own comfort to make sure Kano’s money is spent on the people, not on leaders. That is our guiding principle, and we will not compromise it,” the governor added.
He pledged to continue prioritising education, healthcare, and infrastructure while maintaining transparency and accountability despite criticism from the opposition.
