Badenoch Criticizes UK’s Decision to Recognize Palestine as ‘Utterly Catastrophic’
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch vehemently criticized the Prime Minister Keir Starmer-led United Kingdom’s decision to officially acknowledge the State of Palestine.
Reports indicate that Britain, alongside Australia and Canada, on Sunday recognized a Palestinian state in a profound shift in decades of Western foreign policy.
Britain and Canada became the first G7 countries to undertake this measure, with France and other nations anticipated to follow suit at the annual UN General Assembly, commencing Monday in New York.
However, the decision incited immediate Israeli discontent and denunciation from the opposition.
In a statement on her social media platform X on Sunday, Badenoch characterized the move as “utterly catastrophic.”
She contended that the decision rewards terrorism without any stipulations, and the move would be profoundly regretted.
She asserted, “Utterly catastrophic. We will all lament the day this decision was made. Rewarding terrorism with no contingencies whatsoever for Hamas.
“It leaves hostages languishing in Gaza and fails to alleviate the suffering of innocent individuals ensnared in this conflict.”
The Winchester opposition leader accused Labour of catering to its “hard left” rather than addressing Britain’s urgent domestic issues.
UK poised to recognize Palestinian state
“It is because Labour is unable to resolve the significant challenges our society faces that they resort to discredited student union campaigns to placate the hard left.
Citing instances of Labour’s shortcomings, she remarked, “They cannot rectify the NHS, so they advocate assisted suicide. – They cannot generate employment for young individuals, so they grant voting rights at 16.
“They cannot address immigration, yet they opt to recognize Palestine instead. And so forth. This is the same leader who paid £35bn in reparations to Mauritius along with the forfeiture of the Chagos islands.”
Badenoch further criticized what she described as the prime minister’s lack of discernment.
“Everything we are witnessing is a result of a Prime Minister who lacks a vision for the nation and sound judgment.
“He will devote the next four years pandering to the whims of the Labour left to maintain power, leaving a colossal mess for us to rectify.”
Earlier, Starmer announced the recognition of Palestine in a post on X, asserting the move was intended to facilitate a two-state solution.
He declared, “Today, to rekindle the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine.”
