Afriland Publishes FAQs On Towers Fire, Confirms Investigation Ongoing

Afriland Properties Plc has released a detailed set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) addressing public concerns over the tragic fire incident that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, earlier this week.

The inferno, which broke out in the building’s basement inverter room, claimed the lives of 10 staff members, according to separate statements issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Capital Plc, both of which had offices in the high-rise complex.

Eyewitnesses reported that the intensity of the blaze forced some occupants to jump from windows in desperate attempts to escape.

In its publication, Afriland Properties explained that the FAQs were compiled to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident, the company’s immediate response, and ongoing safety measures.

The document addresses critical questions from the public, including the cause of the fire, the building’s fire safety systems, evacuation procedures, and future steps to prevent a recurrence.

While acknowledging that the fire originated from the basement inverter room, the company stressed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact trigger. It also reaffirmed its commitment to cooperate fully with regulatory authorities and emergency agencies conducting inquiries.

Afriland further noted that efforts are underway to support families of the victims, including counseling, compensation, and welfare packages. It also pledged to carry out a comprehensive safety audit of all its managed properties.

“The loss of lives is deeply painful, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected. We are working closely with authorities to ensure that the causes are properly identified and that all safety protocols are strengthened,” the company stated.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had earlier confirmed that emergency responders battled the flames for hours before bringing the situation under control. Questions have since been raised about fire preparedness in high-rise commercial buildings in the city.

The FAQs released by Afriland are expected to serve as both a public update and a framework for accountability as the investigation continues.
