Yakasai: Jonathan’s Candidacy No Threat to Tinubu, Nigerians Still Recall Past Failures

Director General of the Tinubu Support Group, Umar Yakasai, has dismissed concerns that former President Goodluck Jonathan could pose a serious challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Yakasai argued that Nigerians still vividly remember the shortcomings of Jonathan’s administration, including insecurity, corruption, and widespread economic hardship.
“Jonathan was in government for six years. Nigerians saw how his policies worked. In 2015, they voted for change because they were dissatisfied with the insecurity, corruption, and hardship his government represented. Those memories are still fresh,” Yakasai said.
He maintained that Tinubu’s administration, despite its initial turbulence following fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the naira, has begun to stabilize the economy.
According to him, inflation levels are trending downward compared to early 2023, while investments such as the Dangote Refinery have helped ease the burden of fuel prices.
On insecurity, Yakasai acknowledged persisting challenges in parts of the country but insisted that Tinubu’s government has outperformed its predecessors in tackling violent crime and unrest. He added that the president retains strong political backing from governors, ministers, and party structures, which would give him a decisive edge in 2027.
The comments underscore the ruling party’s confidence that Jonathan’s potential candidacy, if it materializes, will not derail Tinubu’s re-election bid.
For the APC, the former president’s record remains a political liability rather than an asset in the eyes of many voters.
