Tinubu’s First Set of Commissioners: Where Are They Now?
When Bola Tinubu assumed office as the Governor of Lagos State in 1999, he appointed a team of dedicated and talented individuals to help him govern the state. Fifteen years later, many of these commissioners have gone on to achieve great things in their respective careers.
Some notable commissioners who have made significant contributions to Nigerian politics and government include Yemi Osinbajo, who served as Tinubu’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and later became the Vice President of Nigeria. Lai Mohammed, who was Tinubu’s Chief of Staff and Commissioner, went on to serve as Minister of Information under President Muhammadu Buhari.
Rauf Aregbesola, who served as Tinubu’s Commissioner for Works, later became the Governor of Osun State for two terms and Minister of Interior. Babatunde Fashola, who was Tinubu’s Chief of Staff after Lai Mohammed, later became the Governor of Lagos State for two terms and Minister of Works. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who served as Tinubu’s Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, is currently the Governor of Lagos State.
In the finance and economy sector, Wale Edun, who was Tinubu’s Commissioner for Finance, is currently the Minister of Finance. Dele Alake, who served as Tinubu’s Commissioner for Information, is currently the Minister of Solid Minerals. Ben Akabueze, who was Tinubu’s Commissioner for Budget and Planning, later became the Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank.
Unfortunately, some of Tinubu’s commissioners have passed on, including Chief (Mrs) Kemi Nelson and Rafiu Tinubu, who later defected to the PDP. Kaoli Olusanya remains a party chieftain in Lagos, and his daughter, Abisola, is the current Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos State.
The careers of Tinubu’s first set of commissioners demonstrate the impact of their service under his administration and their continued contributions to Nigerian politics and governance. Their achievements serve as a testament to the leadership and mentorship they received during their time in office.
