NNPCL MD Maryamu Idris Appointed Nigeria’s OPEC Representative
Maryamu Idris, the Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has been appointed as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The announcement was made on Thursday, September 18, 2025. Idris will serve as Nigeria’s chief technical liaison within OPEC, particularly on the Economic Commission Board, which reviews oil market conditions and makes policy recommendations to the OPEC Conference.
The appointment was made to ensure Nigeria’s interests are properly represented in OPEC’s decision-making processes at a time of global energy market shifts. Idris will work closely with domestic stakeholders, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
Idris, who holds degrees in Economics from the University of Abuja and Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, United Kingdom, has extensive experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
She previously worked at the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative before joining NNPC, where she rose through the ranks in crude oil marketing, pricing, and valuation.
She became Managing Director of NNPC Trading in April 2025 after serving as Executive Director in charge of Crude & Condensate and Planning & Commercial.
Her appointment is expected to give Nigeria a stronger voice in OPEC deliberations and improve coordination of policies between local institutions and the international oil body.
