‘I spoke to him yesterday’ – Wike confirms Gov Fubara’s readiness to return to Rivers
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is prepared to return to office following the lifting of the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state.
Wike disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, noting that he had spoken directly with Fubara, who is currently outside the country. According to the former Rivers governor, Fubara expressed his readiness to resume duties and ensure stability in the oil-rich state.
“I spoke to him yesterday. He is ready to come back and continue his work. What is important now is for peace to reign in Rivers State,” Wike said.
In March, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and the State House of Assembly. The drastic measure followed months of political turmoil arising from a bitter rift between Fubara and his predecessor, now FCT Minister Wike, which led to heightened tensions and fears of a breakdown of law and order.
On Wednesday, President Tinubu lifted the emergency rule, citing improved security and the need to restore democratic governance in the state. However, Fubara was reported to be abroad at the time of the announcement.
With his expected return, political observers say the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Fubara can mend fractured relationships and stabilize his administration. Meanwhile, stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and civil society groups have called on all parties in Rivers politics to prioritize peace and good governance.
