Germany Urges US To Safeguard Press Freedom Amid Journalist Visa Concerns

Germany has called on the United States to uphold the freedom of the press, warning that recent visa restrictions targeting foreign journalists could undermine media independence and democratic values.
German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul made the appeal on Wednesday, September 17, stressing that journalists must be able to work without fear of restrictions or intimidation.
His remarks follow reports that Washington is considering limiting visa durations for foreign correspondents, a move that critics say could hamper international media coverage of U.S. affairs.
“Free and independent reporting is the lifeblood of democracy,” Wadephul said, urging the U.S. to ensure that journalists are not placed under undue constraints.
He noted that Germany expects its allies, especially America, to respect international standards on press freedom.
The call has gained attention as press unions and watchdogs warn that the visa restrictions would shrink both the quality and quantity of news coverage from the United States.
Germany’s intervention highlights broader European concerns about press freedoms, particularly at a time when global democratic norms are under strain.
