Townsend Bows to Backlash, Apologises Over ‘Crazy’ Chinese Food Remark

American tennis star Taylor Townsend has apologised after sparking outrage with a social media post in which she described traditional Chinese food as “crazy” while competing in Shenzhen.

The 28-year-old posted videos on Tuesday night, September 16, 2025, showing a buffet that included dishes such as bullfrogs, sea cucumbers and turtles. In the clips, Townsend appeared visibly uneasy and at one point asked, “Aren’t those poisonous? Aren’t those the ones that give you warts and boils?”

The comments drew swift criticism online, with many accusing her of cultural insensitivity and disrespect toward Chinese cuisine.

By Wednesday, September 17, Townsend issued an apology on Instagram, saying she was “deeply sorry” and acknowledging the privilege she has as an athlete who travels the world.

“There is no excuse,” she wrote. “I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart. My words did not reflect the kindness and hospitality I’ve experienced here in China. I will be better.”

She added that her remarks did not represent her overall experience in Shenzhen and praised her hosts for their generosity.

The incident has reignited conversations about the responsibilities of athletes to respect local cultures during international competitions.
