Flooding: Sokoto Assembly Demands Evaluation, Aid for Impacted Communities

The Sokoto State House of Assembly has issued a call for swift evaluation and immediate intervention in response to the flooding in the local government areas of Gada, Kebbe, and Dange/Shuni.

The resolution was adopted during the plenary session on Wednesday, following a joint motion of urgent public significance put forth by lawmakers Kabiru Dauda (APC–Gada East), Sama’ila Hamisu (APC–Kebbe), and Sirajo Shuni (APC–Dange/Shuni).

The assembly implored the state government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assess the extent of the devastation and deliver relief supplies to the beleaguered communities.

Legislators noted that the calamity had ravaged agricultural lands, displaced inhabitants, and inflicted extensive damage on homes and infrastructure.

In Gada LGA, crops such as millet, maize, guinea corn, beans, onions, and peppers were engulfed.

In Kebbe, several villages, including Bashi, Fakku, Margai, and Kuchi, suffered severe impacts, while in Dange/Shuni, numerous residents of the Dambuwa and Shuni communities were rendered homeless.

The House further advocated for enduring preventive measures, including erosion control and awareness campaigns, to mitigate the effects of future catastrophes.

In a distinct resolution, the assembly summoned the contractor responsible for the 38-kilometer Gada–Illela road to appear before its committee, in light of allegations of project abandonment, which residents claimed had rendered the road impassable during the rainy season.
