Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Eases for Fifth Straight Month, Hits 20.12% in August

Nigeria’s inflation rate slowed for the fifth consecutive month, dropping to 20.12 percent in August 2025 from 21.88 percent in July, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The decline represents the lowest inflation figure since May 2023 and signals a gradual easing of price pressures after years of persistent increases that eroded household purchasing power.

The NBS attributed the slowdown largely to moderation in food inflation, transport costs, and energy prices.

The report showed that while food prices remained elevated, key staples such as grains, tubers, and cooking oil recorded slower increases compared to previous months.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile items like food and energy, also dropped slightly, reflecting broader stability across non-food sectors.

Analysts say this could be an early sign that recent monetary and fiscal measures are beginning to yield results.

Economic experts note that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s tight monetary stance, alongside improved agricultural output and ongoing interventions to stabilize fuel supply, have contributed to the easing trend.

Despite the positive outlook, the NBS cautioned that inflationary pressures remain high, particularly in urban centers where transportation and housing costs continue to bite.

The sustained slowdown offers some relief for households and businesses, but economists stress that Nigeria must maintain consistent reforms to consolidate gains, address structural bottlenecks, and sustain growth.
