Collaboration Key to Successful Implementation of New Tax Law, Says Adedeji

The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, has stressed that effective collaboration among all stakeholders is critical to the successful implementation of Nigeria’s new tax laws.

Adedeji, who spoke at a stakeholders’ engagement session in Abuja on Monday, said that FIRS — which is currently transitioning into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) cannot singlehandedly deliver the expected gains of the reforms without the cooperation of taxpayers, subnational governments, private sector players, and other institutions.

According to him, the reform is not merely about enforcement but about creating a fair, transparent, and growth-driven tax system that will support national development.

He added that for the new tax framework to succeed, mutual trust, compliance, and information sharing across federal, state, and local levels must be prioritized.

“The success of these new laws cannot rest on the shoulders of the FIRS alone. It requires the joint efforts of everyone governments at all levels, businesses, institutions, and ordinary citizens. If we work in silos, we will not achieve the transformation that these reforms promise,” Adedeji said.

The FIRS boss assured Nigerians that the transition to NRS would usher in improved efficiency, simplify tax compliance, and broaden the revenue base without overburdening existing taxpayers.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, said the country has recorded significant improvements in its economic outlook since the assumption of office by President Bola Tinubu.

Oyedele noted that while challenges remain, the fiscal and tax reforms introduced by the administration were already laying the foundation for sustainable growth, improved revenue generation, and a friendlier business environment.

“Nigeria is no longer where it was before these reforms began. We are seeing clearer pathways for businesses to thrive, for investors to have confidence, and for government to mobilize resources in a fairer way.

Collaboration remains the cornerstone of making these reforms impactful,” he said.

Both officials reiterated the commitment of government to building a modern tax system that balances revenue mobilization with economic competitiveness, while ensuring that the burden is distributed equitably across sectors.
