Atiku Warns of Social Unrest, Says Nigerians Battling Severe Hunger

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised the alarm over what he described as the worsening hunger and poverty ravaging millions of Nigerians, warning that the situation could lead to social unrest if urgent measures are not taken.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to provide effective solutions to the food crisis nearly two years after assuming office.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, the former vice president lamented that the government has shown little sign of capacity to tackle the severe hardship confronting ordinary citizens.

“At this time, there are no manifest signs that this government is capable of addressing the grim issue of severe hunger staring the poor in the face after two years in power,” Atiku said.

He argued that inflation, high food prices, and widespread poverty have pushed many Nigerians to the brink, warning that frustration could spill over into the streets if the government continues to downplay the crisis.

Atiku further noted that despite promises of economic recovery and reforms, most citizens are unable to meet basic needs, while government policies have not translated into meaningful relief for households.

He urged President Tinubu to urgently prioritize policies that would ensure food security, strengthen the agricultural sector, and provide social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable Nigerians.

“The hardship is biting hard, and Nigerians cannot continue to live under the weight of poverty and uncertainty,” Atiku added.
