TRCN, NTI Charged With New Regulatory, Standardisation Functions

The Federal Ministry of Education has allocated new responsibilities to two of its agencies, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI).
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, articulated in a statement on Sunday that this initiative is part of ongoing reforms aimed at fortifying the teaching profession, optimizing educational delivery, and ensuring superior learning experiences for every Nigerian child.
The Minister elaborated that both entities have been endowed with new operational directives to bolster governance, oversight, and accountability.
“Key provisions for TRCN encompass obligatory teacher registration and licensing, digital integration with the national Education Management Information System, and stringent enforcement of ethical standards and discipline within the profession.
“The NTI, conversely, will function as the national executing body for remote teacher training programmes, ensuring its courses adhere to sanctioned standards and frameworks. Under the new structure, the NTI will revert to its primary mission of in-service teacher training and continuous professional development at foundational, basic, and post-basic levels, while the TRCN will concentrate solely on regulating the teaching profession and licensing qualified educators nationwide.”
Dr. Alausa characterized the reform as “a significant day for the Nigerian child,” underscoring that the restructuring will perpetuate ongoing advancements in teacher quality and educational outcomes.
He reiterated the government’s dedication to embedding professionalism in teaching, augmenting access to continuous professional development, and enforcing compliance across all educational tiers.
“This reform is about tangible results and sustainability. It is about constructing a future where Nigerian children are taught by the finest, prepared for excellence, and supported by the best. We are consolidating progress to ensure sustainability, capability, and accountability within our teaching workforce. It is Renewed Hope in action,” the Minister asserted.
He assured Nigerians that the government will persist in closely monitoring implementation while collaborating with states, private proprietors, and other stakeholders to fulfill this mandate.
