Resident Doctors Suspend Warning Strike, Resume Work Sunday

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its five-day nationwide warning strike after two days, directing members to resume work from 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

The decision was reached during an extraordinary virtual National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

NARD said it suspended the strike to give the Federal Government a two-week window to implement agreements reached in their ongoing negotiations.

The association explained that the government had already started addressing some of its demands, including the payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to affected doctors.

Speaking on the decision, NARD leadership noted that the action was taken as a show of goodwill to ease the burden on Nigerians who rely heavily on public hospitals.

However, they warned that the doctors would return to the picket lines if the government fails to implement the outstanding demands within the stipulated timeframe.

The doctors also drew attention to state-level issues, particularly in Oyo State, where they urged the government to comply with a 15-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) over unresolved matters at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso. NARD further called on other state governments to swiftly resolve welfare concerns affecting resident doctors in their hospitals.

The strike, which commenced on Friday, September 12, 2025, had disrupted services across major public hospitals in Nigeria, leaving patients stranded before its suspension was announced.
