Nepal’s Capital Returns to Normalcy After Deadly Protests, New Interim Leader Appointed

Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, is slowly returning to normal after a wave of violent anti-corruption protests that shook the country, leaving at least 51 people dead and over 1,300 injured.

The protests, which began on Monday, escalated on Tuesday, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and prompting the army to take control of the streets.

In a bid to restore order and address the protesters’ demands, 73-year-old former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s first female interim prime minister on Friday.

Her appointment has been widely welcomed, with many Nepalis seeing her as a symbol of change and a champion of good governance.

Karki’s new government faces significant challenges, including rooting out endemic corruption, addressing economic woes, and ensuring security.

Over 12,500 prisoners who escaped from jails during the chaos remain at large, and the country is grappling with high unemployment, particularly among young people.

Despite these challenges, many Nepalis are hopeful that Karki’s leadership will bring about positive change. “The interim government decision is good for now,” said Durga Magar, a 23-year-old shop worker in Kathmandu.

“The main issue for the people, especially young people, at this time is corruption. It doesn’t matter whether it is Gen Z or anyone older in politics who tackles it — it just needs to stop.”

Karki’s appointment has also been welcomed by the international community, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending his best wishes and reaffirming India’s commitment to Nepal’s peace, progress, and prosperity.

As Nepal looks to the future, many are cautiously optimistic about the prospects for change. “We don’t know what will happen in the future now, but we are satisfied today and hope it will not remain as tense ahead,” Magar added.
