Flood Displaces Over 500 Households in Kaduna
A devastating flood has displaced more than 500 households in Kigo Road Extension, Kaduna North Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving residents counting their losses.
The incident, which followed hours of heavy rainfall, submerged homes, destroyed property, and forced hundreds of families to seek temporary refuge in nearby schools, religious centres, and with relatives.
Eyewitnesses described the flood as one of the worst in recent years, with water levels rising swiftly and overwhelming drainage systems.
“We barely had time to pack anything before the water entered our houses. Many of us are stranded with no food or shelter,” said Musa Ibrahim, a resident who lost most of his belongings.
Community leaders have appealed to the state government and relevant agencies for urgent intervention to provide relief materials and address the root causes of flooding in the area. According to them, poor drainage infrastructure and indiscriminate waste disposal have worsened the impact of seasonal rains in Kaduna.
The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident, noting that officials are carrying out assessments to determine the extent of the damage and the immediate needs of affected households.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of displaced persons and provide them with temporary shelter and relief support,” a SEMA spokesperson stated.
Environmental experts have warned that with climate change intensifying rainfall patterns, flooding in urban centres like Kaduna may become more frequent unless proactive measures are taken.
They stressed the need for proper urban planning, improved drainage channels, and community sensitisation on waste management.
Meanwhile, residents have called on both the federal and state governments to implement long-term solutions to avert a recurrence.
