Police Probe Anambra Funeral Attack as Suspected Cultists Kill Four, Injure 15

Tragedy struck on Friday in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, when suspected cultists invaded a burial ceremony and opened fire on mourners, killing four people and injuring at least 15 others.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who arrived on motorcycles, disrupted the funeral of an 18-year-old boy with sporadic gunfire, sending guests running for cover. The attackers fled the scene before security operatives arrived.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, disclosing that 16 expended cartridges were recovered from the venue. Officers from the Ogidi Division were said to have responded to a distress call, restored calm, and moved the wounded to nearby hospitals.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unacceptable.” He vowed that the command had launched a full-scale investigation to track down the perpetrators and dismantle cult groups terrorising communities in the state.

“The command assures residents that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that those behind this heinous act are identified, arrested, and made to face the full wrath of the law,” the police said in a statement.

The incident has heightened tension in Ogidi and surrounding areas, with residents urging authorities to strengthen security and intensify the fight against cult-related violence in Anambra.
