Peter Obi Decries Double Standards in Nigeria’s Fight Against Corruption
Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over what he described as Nigeria’s “double standards” in the fight against corruption, accusing authorities of targeting young people while ignoring large-scale financial crimes.
In a conversation with fellow passengers aboard a flight, Obi lamented that while youths carrying laptops are frequently profiled and harassed as suspected internet fraudsters, public officials accused of looting billions of naira often go unpunished.
“When you come here, you’re careful to see young people. If you carry a computer, you are arrested. Meanwhile, people are stealing public money and getting away with it. Somebody just took ₦8 billion and nothing happened. A small boy carrying a laptop is treated like a criminal. What kind of country is that?” Obi asked.
The former presidential candidate emphasized that Nigeria cannot achieve genuine change until it tackles corruption at all levels with fairness and consistency.
His remarks come amid renewed public debates on governance, accountability, and youth profiling by security agencies. Critics argue that the heavy-handed approach toward young Nigerians with laptops or tech devices has stifled innovation, while the political class continues to be dogged by allegations of unchecked corruption.
Obi’s comments have sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians echoing his concerns over systemic injustice and the need for reforms that prioritize transparency and equity.
