Nigeria Condemns Israeli Airstrike in Qatar, Urges Restraint, Renewed Peace Efforts

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, targeting senior Hamas officials. The government described the attack as a serious threat to regional stability and a setback to ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa stressed that cross-border military operations must respect national sovereignty and adhere strictly to international law. “This development raises grave concerns for regional peace and the future of diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East,” the statement noted. Nigeria also highlighted Qatar’s pivotal role as a mediator in the Middle East, urging all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any action that could escalate tensions further. The government reiterated its commitment to supporting diplomatic channels, de-escalation, and lasting peace, while emphasizing its readiness to collaborate with the international community to promote security and stability across the region. The airstrike, reportedly carried out under “Operation Summit of Fire,” represents the first direct Israeli strike on a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The attack hit a residential complex in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district, killing five Hamas members, including the son of senior negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, as well as a Qatari security official, Lance Corporal Bader Saad Mohammed Al Humaidi Al Dosari. Reports indicate the strike coincided with Hamas negotiators reviewing a new ceasefire proposal from Qatar’s Prime Minister. The international community reacted swiftly to the attack. The United Nations Security Council, supported by the United States, condemned the strikes and called for immediate de-escalation, reaffirming the importance of respecting Qatar’s sovereignty. Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, accused Israel of undermining peace efforts and endangering the lives of hostages held by Hamas. In response, the President of the United Arab Emirates has embarked on a diplomatic tour across Gulf states to strengthen regional coordination following the attack. Amid rising tensions, Qatar has announced it will host an emergency Arab-Islamic summit from September 14 to 15, 2025, aimed at addressing the Israeli airstrike, coordinating collective regional security measures, and revitalizing diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. Nigeria’s condemnation aligns with wider international appeals for restraint, dialogue, and adherence to international norms. The Federal Government stressed that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through renewed diplomatic engagement, responsible leadership, and the avoidance of provocative military actions.
